Interview with John Schwingle
John Schwingle manages the State and Local alliances for HP Exstream. A veteran of over a decade in helping build partnerships in the State Government sector, John joined HP in 2010. He also happens to be a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan.   [Interview by Geoff Rothman, HP Exstream Partner Engagement Manager]

[Geoff] Thanks for taking time out during quarter end to meet with me. When you’re not on the road working with Partners, what do you enjoy doing outside of work?

[John] I cherish the time on the weekends to spend with my family. Our daughter is five, and we love finding fun things to do in the DC Metro area. We are expecting daughter number two in July so we are thrilled about that as well. The National Zoo is one of our favorites and we make a day of that every couple of months.

I also help coach my nephew’s little league team. Wrangling 8 and 9 year olds is tougher than any 12 hour day I may encounter, but the payoff is fun. It’s amazing the amount of progress that they can make in just a few weeks.

Golf is a rare thing these days, but sometimes I can at least get out and see the PGA guys….we actually enjoyed the Masters in Augusta this year with one of our partners which was a blast.

[Geoff] I noticed on LinkedIn that you have substantial experience in both Business Development and with Alliance Management. Briefly give us your background and how you ended up at HP.

[John] Out of college I worked for james martin + company, a consulting firm best known for project methodologies and program management expertise. We rebranded as Headstrong in 2000, shifting our focus to the financial markets and large relationship management software/process engagements. I managed our alliances, and still remember quite a bit about launching those first partnerships with IBM and Siebel Systems. With Siebel in particular, their CMO was a gentleman by the name of Bruce Cleveland who was absolutely brilliant in the program he designed and ran. Being a Siebel consulting partner in those days was a privilege, and Bruce’s group ensured that every partner was invested in the relationship for the long term.

After six years at Headstrong I moved to the software division of Pitney Bowes to manage their State Government Alliances. Moving the software side of the world was an initial culture shock, but I was fortunate to help develop some strong alliances with all of the major SI’s that had triple digit growth y/y while I was there. Part of my responsibility was the Hewlett-Packard relationship, and that helped me make my decision to come onboard to HP Exstream.

[Geoff] No pressure but now you have to help me substantiate my email teaser line! How can partners effectively use their Alliance Manager & Support team to achieve that maximum return for a minimal investment?

[John] The tenets of alliance success haven’t changed a bit since I started in this business. Successful partners are consistently those that view the relationship as an investment in their business and take advantage of all the alliance support assets that are offered. They are actively engaged not only on the opportunity in front of them but the ones coming in 12-24 months- they plan well, and make certain that their success will not be a one-time event. HP Exstream has, by far, the best alliance support team I have ever engaged with. Partners that don’t use them are cheating themselves and are either in the dark or headed down a path that they need to reverse course on. The bottom line is that HP Exstream is the leader in the marketplace- and we are partnering and winning deals in every vertical. Every prospective or active partner needs to have a personal relationship with their alliance manager and the Alliance Support Team. If they make that investment, the returns come back very high.
